Tribal Warrior 1 by ~Chonastock
Ahh helllllllllll. I finally found the first Filipin@ cultural appropriator I have seen. =.= Seriously I thought our cultures were safe because people rarely know about our cultures to fetishsize and culture appropriate. (thank god) But apparently we aren’t so safe.
There is no mistaking that what she is wearing is a traditional Igorot headdress and boar tusk around her neck. No just no. Just no. Same as with the Native American headdresses, no one should wear them unless you one of the Igorot ethnic groups, a Filipin@ who knows the meanings and cultural significance of them and who wears them when doing traditional dances, or only wearing it if you are in the Igorot village in Baguio where they actually let visitors try them on for tourism which is money for the Igorots themselves since they are the ones running and giving permission to do so. This…..no just hell fuckin no.
You aren’t no “tribal warrior dear”. No way even near it.
not to mention using “tribe” is actually frowned upon by most, if not all, Social Scientist peeps in the philippines. It should just be “ethnic group”
Exactly. The use of the term tribes is a bad word for describing the various ethnic groups who kept their cultural practices and resisted colonization. Because that is what it all is. They are ethnic groups. The Bontoc is one ethnic group. The Kalinga is one ethnic group. The Ibaloi, the Isneg, Kankanaey. Each one are their own ethnic groups. Related to each other ya but their own separate ethnic groups. Same with all the “indigenous” (I feel iffy with that term because all the ethnic groups are indigenous to the Philippines, with the Aeta/Ati groups being the first indigenous groups to arrive) ethnic groups in the Philippines who have kept their traditions and cultures despite colonization. We have how many ethnic groups in the Philippines. Calling the ethnic groups that kept their indigenous cultures despite colonization as tribal and tribes I find as an insult.
Oh hell no. I was hoping this would never happen.
Fuck this racist woman and everyone else involved in making this pic.
I mean like what.
Bitch probs thought “oh, I look so Native!” and thought she could get away with it because like if anybody was like “cultural appropriation” she could be like “hahaa it’s not native american so it’s not racist”
This is sooo not Pinoy.
“Ifugao Igorot ceremonial headdress made from rattan, chicken feathers, pig tail, and head of a Philippine exotic bird “kalaw” (Hornbill). The headdress are use during wedding, feast and other ritual ceremonies except “tagtag” and perhaps other ritual ceremonies as well.”
Why is something worn for sacred occasions being donned by a woman who obviously has some sexualized fantasy about what a “tribal warrior” looks like?
Does she know anything about Ampual or Hinumbian or Liddum or any other Ifugao dieties that are invoked when wearing that headdress? No. The only purpose served here is to live out her sexualized fantasy about a “tribal warrior.” For her it’s totally okay to wear this headdress because her people aren’t going to be exploited for being “tribal” (White person talk for uncivilized savage). She can put any culture and wear it like the skin of another person, which demonstrates the most disgusting type of white privilege there is today.
This is not Pinoy because it exploits the culture and the history of the Ifugao.
This is not Pinoy because it demeans all Filipino women with fetishization, into a caricature of an exotic sex object.
This is not Pinoy because it erases the meaning of the ceremonies where this headdress is worn.
This is not Pinoy because an Ifugao woman was not even asked to portray her people, effectively saying that pictures of white people are more valuable.
This is not Pinoy. This is white privilege.
